The 2022/23 WSL Manchester derby shall be staged on the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City have introduced they’ll host their WSL conflict with rivals Manchester United on the Etihad Stadium in December.

The match will mark the second time the Manchester derby has been performed at City’s foremost stadium, following the pair’s conflict in entrance of a then WSL report crowd of 31,213 in September 2019.

The match shall be performed on the weekend of December 10-11, with tickets now on sale.

“This is fantastic news and something to look forward to for the new season,” mentioned Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor.

“For the derby at the Academy Stadium earlier this year, it was fantastic to see a sell-out crowd there and the demand for tickets was incredible. A Manchester derby always has that little bit of extra spice, but to bring it back to the Etihad again – especially with the growth of the league over the recent seasons – will take it to another level.”

City are the second WSL side to announce a marquee match to be played in a bigger arena ahead of the 2022/23 season, after Arsenal confirmed they would host a trio of league games, plus their three Champions League group stage matches should they qualify . at Emirates.

The move sees clubs try to capitalize on the post-Euro 2022 wave, with a selection of attendance records being smashed during this summer’s tournament.

Clubs will be hoping for a similar trend seen after the 2019 World Cup. A selection of WSL matches – including the league’s first Manchester derby – were staged in large arenas that attracted five-figure crowds.

“Playing the derby in entrance of over 31,000 folks in 2019 is certainly one of my favourite moments of my City profession, doubtless,” added City captain Steph Houghton.

“The ambiance the followers created was simply wonderful and it was a day to keep in mind for all of us concerned. As a lot because the Academy Stadium is our house and it was completely unimaginable to see it offered out for the derby final season, to have a much bigger venue just like the Etihad Stadium will hopefully allow individuals who missed out final time to expertise our Manchester derby in all its glory.”
