Phil Foden hesitant to the final

Phil Foden could miss England’s final conflict with Italy 2020 on Sunday night after suffering a foot injury.

The 21-year-old came in as a replacement in the Three Lions 2-1 victory against Denmark on Wednesday night, but he has since been knocked in the lead to the final at Wembley.

And BBC Sport reports that Foden put out the last three training sessions of the three lions before their first final in the European Championship ever, and that he is now hesitant to play any role in Sunday’s spectacle.

Coach Gareth Southgate has also admitted that the medical staff must ‘assess’ the forward before kick-off, to see if he can be mentioned in the starting line-up, or if he will not be able to participate in the final.

“He has a fairly minor foot injury,” Southgate said.

“But it is only if there will be one who is cleared in time for him to be able to participate in the game, so we have to judge it again later.”

The foot started the tournament in Southgate’s starting lineup, but he lost his place on the side after the emergence of Bukayo Saka on the right flank. He did not participate at all in England’s 4-0 hammering of Ukraine in the quarterfinals, but went off the bench to help England overcome Denmark in the semis.

He is now facing a race against time to be ready for Sunday’s Euro 2020 final against Italy and risks being left out of the 23-man squad if he cannot prove his condition. Southgate described the foot injuries as “minor”, but that could be enough to put the Manchester City star sideways.

England aim to win the tournament for the first time in its history, having reached its first major final since the 1966 World Cup success 55 years ago.
