Palmer and Nkunku Propel Chelsea Towards European Glory with Victory over Brighton

Chelsea can secure a top-six spot in the Premier League by avoiding defeat on the last day, following their victory over Brighton with 10 players on Wednesday.

Chelsea extended their European push with a fourth straight win, triumphing 2-1 over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

A stellar header by Cole Palmer, making it his 22nd goal of the Premier League season, gave Chelsea the lead after VAR denied them an early penalty.

Both teams had opportunities, with Pascal Gross coming close for Brighton, but Christopher Nkunku’s goal gave Chelsea some breathing room in the second half.

Reece James was red-carded for a late foul, and Danny Welbeck scored a late goal, but Chelsea managed to secure a top-seven finish with one game to go.

Chelsea initially thought they had a penalty, but VAR overturned the decision after a challenge on Marc Cucurella.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team kept pushing and finally found the net in the 34th minute, thanks to Palmer’s header.

Chelsea missed a chance to extend the lead right before the break, and Nkunku’s shot went wide early in the second half.

Brighton had a golden opportunity to level the score, but Gross missed from close range in the 57th minute.

Later, Nkunku capitalized on a Gusto pass to double Chelsea’s lead.

Brighton has struggled to win after conceding the first goal in their last 11 Premier League games.

Chelsea’s remarkable form in 2024 has seen them collect 32 points in the league since January, with Palmer playing a significant role.

A top-half finish is within Brighton’s reach if they beat Manchester United on the final matchday.

The Blues have unexpectedly found themselves in the race for European qualification, sitting sixth with destiny in their hands for the last game.
