Mbappe Left Out of Henry’s Initial Lineup for the Olympic Games

Thierry Henry has rolled out the preliminary squad for the France team at the impending Olympic Games, and some marquee players haven’t made the cut.

Henry, steering Les Bleus’ U-23 helm, chose not to roster PSG’s forward Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe is poised to hitch his wagon to Real Madrid soon, following their 15th Champions League title.

The 46-year-old manager needs to whittle his squad down to 22 by July 3. His team will face the United States on July 24, Guinea on July 27, and New Zealand on July 30 during the group stages.

Crafting the squad wasn’t a stroll in the park for Henry due to several clubs’ hesitations to release players for the Olympic tournament. The event, not formally recognized by FIFA, doesn’t mandate clubs to permit their players’ participation.

Henry remarked on Real Madrid’s straightforward stance concerning the Olympics when probed about Mbappe’s exclusion. “The only other time I got this many ‘noes’ was back in my university days. It’s a quick conversation – you ask, they refuse, and that’s the end.”

Despite challenges, Henry successfully enlisted talents like Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace, Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, and Warren Zaire-Emery from PSG.

On the flip side, Chelsea held back Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile, though they did release midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu. When questioned about his feelings towards the Premier League clubs’ decisions, Henry stated, “To be candid, now is not the moment to delve into that. Am I let down or shocked? Neither. It’s within the clubs’ purview, regrettably, aligning with what I’ve reiterated about the Olympic requirements.”

France has a storied history at the Olympics, securing silver in Paris in 1900 and nabbing gold in Los Angeles in 1984.

Regarding player eligibility, the roster must comprise individuals born on or after January 1, 2001 (aged 23 during the Games), but up to three older players may also be included.
