Marcus Rashford’s shoulder surgery & when he could return

Marcus Rashford will undergo surgery on his shoulder injury, and Manchester United expect him to be out until October when he recovers.

Rashford has been playing with shoulder pain since November 2020 and took painkillers to get him through the season. He continued to play through the pain at Euro 2020, and after the tournament, United faced a decision on what to do with him.

There was a fear that the muscle tear in his left shoulder would weaken if it was not treated properly soon, and this week the club had talks with the player about when – or if – he would go under the knife to repair the injury.

Both Rashford and United had been cautious as neither of them wanted him out of action for an extended period. But it is now widely reported that he will undergo surgery next week, and Rashford is expected to return and play in October.

The fact that it is a shoulder injury means that Rashford will be able to keep going while he recovers, which means that it should not take him too long to get up to speed on the other side. It is hoped that surgery will limit the problem once and for all.

The 23-year-old was a key player for United last season, scoring 21 goals and registering 15 assists in 57 games in all competitions. He did not actually start for England at any point at Euro 2020, but was a regular from the bench.

The operation means that Rashford will at least miss United’s first seven league games of the season, while the clash with Everton on October 2 may also come too soon.

The visit on 16 October to Leicester, on the other side of the international break, looks like a realistic goal if it comes too soon.
