Kristoffer Ajer sat at Brentford

Brentford have won the race for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer, 90 minutes understand.

The 23-year-old central defender has been with the Glasgow giants since 2016 and has played almost 200 games for the club.

However, Ajer made it clear to Celtic earlier this summer that he wanted to quit Parkhead. With only 12 months left of his current deal, Ajer felt it was the right time to move on.

Clubs from Italy and Germany were keen to acquire the player, but he told his representatives early on that his preference was to play in the Premier League.

Brentford has now signed a contract that can be worth up to 14 million pounds for the highly regarded Norwegian.

The recently promoted Premier League team held strong opposition to landing the player with Norwich, Brighton and Newcastle who all spoke to Celtic this summer.

A source close to Celtic confirmed to 90 minutes that the deal was completely in agreement with Brentford and that they believed that all parties were satisfied.

Leicester City had previously spoken to Celtic about Ajer, with Brendan Rodgers – the man who converted him from a holding midfielder in a midfield – a big fan, although they instead moved to Frenchman Wesley Fofana.

Ajer is now set for medical treatment in west London before becoming Brentford’s record signing.
