Inter Miami have signed midfielder Ventura Alvarado until the end of the 2021 MLS season, with the contract open for club options for 2022 and 2023. The player will join the South Florida team pending receipt of his international transfer certificate.

The 28-year-old joins Major League Soccer after playing in the Liga MX for almost a decade, most recently with Atletico San Luis. During his ten years in Mexico, Alvarado also played for Club Necaxa, Santos Laguna and Club America. He recorded 186 gigs in all competitions while claiming two MX Clausura titles, an Apertura trophy and the Concacaf Champions League twice.

“We are pleased to have Ventura join Inter Miami to increase the depth and help us strengthen our backline. He is an experienced midfielder who has played at a high level in Mexico and with the national team, says Inter Miami’s football manager and sports director Chris Henderson in a release.

“We have seen his talent on the pitch and his positive attitude and character first and foremost and we look forward to his contribution to the squad.”

Internationally, Alvarado played 13 matches for the US men’s national team after making his debut during a friendly match against Denmark in March 2015. He continued to play for the American side during the Concacaf Gold Cup 2015, where the USA reached the semifinals before losing to Jamaica.

Inter Miami desperately needed a defender to help the club’s backline when they are in last place for the Eastern Conference with nine points in 13 games. Alvarado must make sure to strengthen the team’s defenders, who have been made 23 times this season for a shocking goal difference of -13.
