Genesio Steps In as Fonseca Departs Lille for Impending Milan Switch

After leading Lille to Ligue 1’s upper echelons, Paulo Fonseca bids adieu, paving the way for Bruno Genesio to take the reins, with the Milan head coach position beckoning.

Last year saw Fonseca step into Lille, following managerial stints with Porto, Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Roma. He spurred Lille to claim a top-four slot, securing a spot in the Champions League after finishing fifth the previous season.

Whispers of Fonseca’s departure swirled as Serie A’s Milan sought his expertise to fill Stefano Pioli’s shoes. Lille confirmed these rumors, announcing his exit and Genesio’s subsequent arrival last Wednesday.

Lille’s president, Olivier Letang, welcomed Genesio with open arms, lauding his track record. “Bruno aligns seamlessly with our vision, bringing a robust methodology and strategic insight that complements our ambitions,” Letang stated.

Genesio’s previous tenure as Lyon and Rennes’s mastermind earned him the Ligue 1 Manager of the Year accolade in 2021-22, a season marked by an impressive 82 goals under his guidance.
