Former Chelsea skipper Cahill joins Bournemouth

Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has signed a one-year contract with championship club Bournemouth.

The former England international, 35, was a free agent after his contract with Crystal Palace expired in June.

Cahill spent two seasons with Palace but couldn’t agree on new terms with the Eagles.

Last season, Cahill played 20 games for Palace, helping them keep four sheets clean. He made 13 tackles with a 69.23% success and won 61.87% of his 139 matches.

The veteran defender joins forces with former Chelsea teammate Scott Parker, who is head coach at Bournemouth.

Cahill made 290 appearances in all competitions at Stamford Bridge between 2012 and 2019 and twice won the Premier League and the FA Cup and the Champions League.

“I’m at this point in my career, I needed something to get me to play,” Cahill told the Bournemouth website.

“I think it’s the best place for me. I wanted a goal and something to challenge myself.

“I had the chance to play in the Premier League, and it has been 17 years since I played in the league, but I saw an opportunity to get involved in this journey.

“I’ve always gotten on well with the manager, I’ve played with him and I have a good relationship, and he has pointed out to me what he’s trying to achieve here.”

Cahil has been selected 61 times by England and has played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups for the Three Lions.
