FA Charges West Ham Star Paqueta for Suspected Betting Violations

Lucas Paqueta refuted claims of scheming to receive a card in four Premier League games to manipulate betting markets. The Football Association (FA) has charged him with violating betting rules, alleging that he sought deliberate cards in different games. Last year, reports emerged of suspicious betting behavior linked to Paqueta, prompting an investigation by the FA. When questioned in March, the Brazilian player stated his willingness to assist in the FA’s inquiry. The FA formally accused Paqueta of trying to provoke carding incidents in four Premier League matches, including games from the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. An FA representative announced that Paqueta faces charges for breaching FA rules E5 and F3 related to his behavior during games against various teams. The accusation is that Paqueta manipulated the outcomes of games by deliberately provoking referee carding decisions to influence betting markets. Paqueta has until June 3 to refute the charges, and he immediately took to social media to protest his innocence and express his determination to clear his name. In his Instagram post, Paqueta expressed surprise and frustration at the FA’s decision to charge him, citing his extensive cooperation with the investigation as evidence of his innocence. The allegations are denied entirely, and he intends to vigorously defend himself. This development follows the ban imposed on Brentford’s Ivan Toney for multiple betting rule violations. Another player facing disciplinary action is Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, currently serving a suspension for breaking gambling regulations. Tonali received a suspended sanction for violations investigated by the FA, adding to the recent scrutiny on players involved in betting-related misconduct.
