Two Chadian ministers, including the oil minister, were fired on Friday (January 11th), according to a presidential decree. “The functions of the two members of the government in charge of the following ministerial departments are terminated,” says the decree signed by President Idriss Deby Itno . The press release does not specify the reasons for their dismissal, nor does it name names for their replacement.

Sources internal to the ministry, it is alleged Mr. Boukar Michel to have sold a block of oil to two different companies: one from mainland China and the other from Taiwan.

Chad, where nearly 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, became an oil country in 2003, when its economy was essentially based on agriculture before that date.

Like all producing countries, it suffered from the sharp drop in oil prices in 2014, which led to a severe recession and significant social repercussions.
