In Senegal, parliamentary elections are scheduled for July 31, 2022. On the side of the main opposition coalition, Yewwi Askan Wi, people like Ousmane Sonko, Aïda Mbodj or Déthié Fall cannot run because the national list of incumbents has been rejected by the Constitutional Council. It is therefore substitutes, unknown to the public, who are in the front line.
as reported from Dakar, Charlotte Idrac
“I did not expect that,” admits Oumar Sy, number one on the national list of replacements for Yewwi Askan Wi. Before the list of holders is annulled led by Ousmane Sonko, he had no chance to sit in the congregation. He is now driven forward on stage, despite himself. Viewers of RTS, the public channel, also discovered his face on Tuesday night during a campaign site
Oumar Sy is originally from the city of Linguère and is the head of the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (Anacim), head of the training and certification department at the security department. He is also the younger brother of Habib Sy, one of the leaders of the coalition. Does he feel pressured? “We do with it, bissap is drawn, you have to drink it,” replies the forty-something, who had not shown political ambition until then, with a smile.
Dropouts A total of fifty substitutes are invested in the national list Yewwi Askan Wi. Economic actors, teachers, traders, legal interpreters or travel agencies, their paths can be turned upside down in the evening of July 31st.
At the beginning of the campaign, Yewwi Askan Wi also recorded a defection: Serigne Mansour Sy Djamil slammed the door shut. In particular, he condemned the exclusion of members of his party in the drafting of lists and decision-making “unilaterally by a small group of leaders” within the coalition.
