In Abidjan, a large gathering of the entire front of the opposition is held. This major event worries as sporadic unrest has rocked the country since August between supporters of the outgoing president and opposition activists. Authorities and parties nevertheless ensure that all safety conditions are met.

as reported from Abidjan, Jenna Le Bras

According to the Ivorian opposition, tens of thousands of people could be present this Saturday in the Félix Houphouet Boigny stadium. A few days ago, a meeting was held at PDCI headquarters to provide the main guidelines for this “giga meeting”.

The main purpose of this preparatory meeting is to reassure the activists: “We invite all our activists and all Ivorians who are in love with peace and justice to come out en masse to say no to the violation of the fundamental law of this country. We will add “That all security arrangements are in place. And therefore fear must leave the minds of the Ivorians.”

Warning from the authorities

On the part of the authorities, we say that we are not worried about this gathering. Mamadou Touré, government spokesman. However, he warns people who are tempted by violent demonstrations.

“With regard to this opposition demonstration, they are free to hold demonstrations in compliance with the rules and respect for order. What we cannot accept are the hate messages, these are the exaggerations that can be of a kind that disturb the calm of other citizens who run their business. As long as this is respected, there is no problem. “

It is, of course, planned to deploy a large number of police and gendarmerie to secure this meeting. Opposition parties called for pacifism and promised that private security would strengthen state systems to avoid unrest.
