Mohamed Bazoum and Mohamed Ould Ghazouani lead

In Chad, following the funeral of Marshal Idriss Déby Itno, the political class is being consulted on the future of the transition. On Friday after the funeral, two presidents of the G5-Sahel met with political actors to get their opinions.

The transition is currently led by a military council led by a general Mahamat Idriss Deby, son of the late Chadian head of state but strongly questioned by the political class and civil society.

The two presidents, Mohamed Bazoum from Niger and Mohamed Ould Ghazouani from Mauritania, were instructed by their G5 Sahel colleagues and the French president to listen to political actors on the transitional model they want.

Transitional institutions responsible for organizing elections

We made this decision because there is currently no political mediation initiative from Central Africa, the two heads of state explained to the thirty political leaders of the opposition and the majority confused who were invited to a hotel in the capital. Among them were Saleh Kebzabo, Mass success,Mahamat Ahmat Alhabo (PLD Secretary General) or Mahamat Zen Bada, Secretary General of Idriss Deby Itno’s party.

After the discussions, the mediators noted the need for a dialogue to set up transitional institutions that will be responsible for drafting a new constitution and organizing elections.

The conclusions of the meeting will be transferred to the Military Transitional Council, to which the Heads of State of the G5-Sahel and France have called for an inclusive transition that takes into account all aspects of Chadian society.

France, guarantor of the transition process

“What emerges from the consultation with the President (Macron) and his counterparts is the need to move very quickly in an inclusive transition that leaves room for political forces,” one of his advisers told the French president, adding “the whole world is well aware that the civilian aspect of the transition must have significant powers and that a satisfactory balance must be struck between the Military Transitional Council and the civilian system that will be put in place. “” That is the only way today, concludes the same source, coming there”.

The African Union and the G5-Sahel will be at the forefront of this issue. France will play a guaranteeing role.
