Mauritania begins vaccination campaign

The health authorities have chosen Rosso, in the south, a city on the border with Senegal, to officially start the vaccination in the province on Monday 19 April. As was the case on 26 March in Nouakchott, vaccination operations target mainly medical staff, the elderly and patients with chronic pathologies.

as reported from Nouakchott, Salem Mejbour Salem

The start of this third phase of the national vaccination campaign was given at the hospital center in Rosso, the capital of a large southern region, Trarza.

The first drops of the AstraZeneca vaccine were first administered to physicians at the Trarza Regional Hospital Center, followed by nurses and other healthcare professionals, especially those who generally receive people with Covid-19.

The vaccination teams, mobilized since Monday, will rotate throughout the week in regional capitals. The campaign extends next week to the capitals of administrative departments.

Mauritania launched its March 26 campaign in Nouakchott with 50,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine. With the same product, still in the capital, another phase began on April 5 for people over the age of 70 and patients with chronic pathologies.

More than 5,000 people have been vaccinated thanks to this Chinese donation. The figure will change with the 69,000 doses of Astra Zeneca, which were received on April 15 as part of the Covax mechanism. Mauritania aims for a 63% vaccination level.
