In Togo, seven months after the end of classes, nearly 2.6 million students returned to school on Monday under incredible conditions. Teachers and parents are concerned about the health situation, while the government reassures and even plans to improve the educational framework.

as reported from Lomé, Peter Sassou Dogbé

It is a special start to the school year that we have never experienced Go. Most parents who take their children to the first day of school after 7 months closed, note and worry: “There are many in the class, two per. benches. So the children also walk around the garden, all without control, ”says one parent.

Limited to 60 students

The health protocol introduced to limit the spread of Covid-19 requires the use of mufflers, a washbasin and limitation to a maximum of 60 students in the classrooms.

At a school in Agbodrafo, 35 kilometers east of the Togolese capital, this is not the case: “We are a little overwhelmed by the number. Otherwise, the government has censored the number of students per Class. He asked us to put a table, a bench that makes up two students per. Table, which must be 62 students per. Class. At the moment, the workforce is there, but we are missing some tables and benches ”.

Optimizing the quality of teaching

All these problems will be solved during the year. The most important thing for the government right now is to optimize the quality of education. “It is disturbing, it is outrageous, that teachers who are proclaimed winners of competitions can automatically win classrooms for teaching. We want to alleviate such curiosities, ”explains Komlan Dodji Kokodoko, Minister of Primary, Secondary, Technical and Craft Education.

This particular re-entry also comes under several threats: 13,000 volunteer teachers are demanding their integration, and public teachers are at war to claim the bonuses promised for two years.
