Another attack by “bandits” in Nigeria. Beef thieves killed thirteen policemen on Sunday (July 18) in the state of Zamfara, in the northwestern part of the country. Police responded to an “emergency call” from residents about an imminent attack by criminals, when police became ambushed, according to a spokeswoman for the local police.
The police patrol was attacked in the village of Kurara Moto, in the district of Bungudu, on Sunday 18 July in the afternoon.
Earlier today, the “bandits”, known as kidnappers and cattle thieves in this region, had already attacked two other villages.
In the first village, they were driven back by the police, in the second they killed a person and looted some shops before attacking the 13 policemen in Kurara Moto, according to witnesses. It was to prevent an imminent attack from criminals that the police had been deployed. They did not survive.
A police spokesman said searches were underway to try to find the “bandits”, known for taking cover in the forest areas of the Rugu forest, which stretches especially in the state of Zamfara. For the past ten years, criminal groups have terrorized the people of this region.
Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle condemned the killings of 13 police officers and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. To date, no military deployment or agreement with the bandits has helped stop the violence.
The last ambush against the police dates back to April last year.
