Tunisia’s Ennahdha party forms another committee

On Thursday, one of Tunisia’s largest parties in parliament announced the formation of a temporary committee to deal with the country’s political crisis.

In a statement, Ennahdha said the new committee will be chaired by Mohamed Goumani, a member of the party’s executive office. The statement added that the committee has jurisdiction and that its decision is binding on the party.

The statement also said that the committee would look for solutions and understandings to avoid the worst for Tunisia and restore its institutions to a normal situation.

On July 25, President Kais Saied fired Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi’s government, interrupted parliament and appointed him head of the prosecutor’s office in a move widely seen as a coup by world leaders and inside the country.

Tunisia has been plagued by a deep crisis since January 16, when Mechichi announced a change of government but Saied refused to hold a ceremony to swear in the new ministers.

Tunisia is seen as the only country that managed to carry out a democratic transition between Arab countries that witnessed popular revolutions that overthrew their ruling regimes, including Egypt, Libya and Yemen.
