The Sudanese authorities approved the constitutional document in its new amended version earlier this week. According to the Official Journal of the European Union, this document extends the transition period by approximately fourteen months. The text was signed in August 2019 between the Forces for Freedom and Change and the Military Council. He is supposed to steer the transition period, which will lead the country towards parliamentary elections. Other very important changes have been made in this document.

The main articles of the amended constitutional document include the extension of the transitional period. The 39-month period began only before the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement. This agreement was signed on 3 October in Juba. Its text was integrated into the constitutional document.

Sovereign Council

The amendment also provides for the formation of a sovereign council of fourteen members instead of the current eleven, five soldiers, five civilians and one consensus member. The three new members will represent the parties that signed the Juba peace agreement.

Another provision in the amendment and perhaps the most important: In the old text, members of the sovereign council and the government were not eligible for election.

Eligible signatories

The exception to the new text is that only those members of the government that signed the Juba peace agreement are now eligible. At that time, they must leave their positions for six months prior to the election. However, the only one who has signed the agreement representing the Sudanese power is General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hmidti.
