Morocco has received its very first delivery of Covid-19 vaccines, designed and produced by the AstraZeneca laboratory. Therefore, after several weeks of communication effects and uncertainty, the coronavirus vaccination campaign will be officially launched in a few days.

as reported from Casablanca, Nina Kozlowski

In the Ministry of Health, it is relief, some even talk about a “miracle”. This Friday, Morocco finally received its first vaccines against Covid-19. Two million doses, produced by the AstraZeneca laboratory and shipped from India, enabling 1 million Moroccans to be vaccinated.

The start of the vaccination campaign will be given to the Avicenne Hospital in Rabat from the start of next week. The first injections are performed on the nursing staff and the police. Originally, the kingdom hoped to launch this campaign last December with the Chinese vaccine designed by Sinopharm, which has not yet sent any dose to Morocco.

In total, the Moroccan authorities have ordered 65 million doses of vaccines from AstraZeneca and Sinopharm to vaccinate 80% of its adult population or 20 million people.

However, the Kingdom remains dependent on the laboratories’ production and delivery plans; and will have to revise its orders downwards. In the coming days, AstraZeneca is expected to deliver an additional eight million doses, while Sinopharm may make an initial shipment of 500,000 doses.
