In his capacity as Chairman of the African Union (AU) High Level Committee on the Libyan Crisis, Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso will receive this Monday, July 26, in Brazzaville, the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Younis el-Menfi. The AU wants to be more involved in resolving the Libyan conflict, which has had repercussions in other parts of the continent for ten years.

The visit of Mohamed Younis el-Menfi follows what took place on June 20 in Brazzaville, by the Tunisian Cheikh Farhat Jaabiri, the spiritual leader of the Ibadites, a man who had taken part in talks on the end of the Libyan crisis held in 2015

According to the official program, Mohamed Younis el-Menfi, who arrives on Monday 26 July in the afternoon, must have personal talks with the Congolese head of state. Denis Sassou-Nguesso, for his part, and according to diplomatic sources, should state for his interlocutor the approach that AU intends to implement so that Libya can resolve its armed conflict and how it intends to support the Libyan authorities until the election organization, the terms and dates of which remain to be determined.

According to the same sources, this approach means that the African Union sends advisers and other envoys to the Libyan authorities. Because the situation in Libya worries the economic community of Central African states. During a summit held in early June in Brazzaville, the group’s leaders discussed the consequences of this Libyan crisis in the sub-region, especially in Chad, which sometimes suffers from invasions by armed gangs.

They also said that the solution to the situation in Libya would undoubtedly come from Africa. Therefore, the AU cannot be ruled out by the Western powers.
