The giant Sanofi promises to market 30 medicines at cost price for the most disadvantaged countries, with its new brand Impact, which will be launched on Monday 4 July. The French pharmaceutical group claims that it wants to “improve access to quality medicines for underserved populations” and Africa would be the first target of the initiative.

Insulin, anticancer, antimalarial, among others: Sanofi has chosen that molecules that the World Health Organization (WHO) considers essential to be sold under the Impact brand and this without benefit for the 40 poorest countries on the planet. This without any difference in quality, assures Josep Catlla, Head of Institutional Affairs, responsible for Sanofi’s social commitment:

“We registered a new brand to preventthere are forgeriesbut the medicine and the active ingredient are the same, so it is the same quality as the products you currently find in pharmacies in France. ”

The African continent is the first target for this initiative, in particular Mozambique, Zambia, Niger and Zimbabwe, but also Syria and Asian countries including Cambodia and Burma. Today, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, people have access to prescriptions but not to drugs that are prescribed to them, explains Pierre Mendiharat, who works with access to drugs at MSF. And therefore all initiatives are welcome. But afterwards you have to look at all the restrictions again. ”

For Nathalie Coulinet, an economist specializing in health issues, this initiative is part of the pharmaceutical giant’s marketing strategy: “It’s a multi-band billiards game, because we restore our imagewe avoid competition, we also avoid counterfeiting. ”

According to Sanofi, the first drug deliveries should be launched in the coming months, depending on deadlines for drug registration.

Last May it was competitor Pfizer, which had undertaken to sell at cost price some of its medicines and vaccines to 45 poor countries, including their vaccine against Covid-19.
