In Ethiopia, members of the federal parliament have begun announcing the modalities of the gap between the authorities in Addis Ababa and the regional state of Tigray in a state of de facto insurgency. The latter, for his part, no longer considers the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed “legitimate”, given that his term expired on Monday.

The Ethiopian federal government will no longer have any interaction with the exercise of the state of Tigray and its various bodies. From now on, he will only have to deal with the lower strata, the municipalities and the district administrations, kebelle, in order to maintain “the basic services” of the state.
These are the decisions made Tuesday night by the federation’s deputies. And on Wednesday, federal subsidies for Tigray were suspended. But so far no security measures have been announced.
On the Tigrayan side, the 38 deputies in the upper house and the 8 deputies in the lower house were recalled to Mekele. Provincial leaders have spent a lot of time on television in recent days explaining the situation to Tigrayans. According to them, the regional state is still subject to federal law, but not by any provisions that would be enacted after October 5, the date according to them for the expiration of Abiy Ahmed’s mandate.
No showdown therefore, while calls for the formation of a technocratic transitional government are multiplying in the opposition to get the federation out of the dead end.
