There has been no tangible progress on the key issues of the election due to the lack of commitment of outgoing President Farmajo to compromise the interests of the nation.

On Monday morning, Farmajo and his allied regional heads of state in Galmudug, HirShabelle and Southwest met with Prime Minister Roble and the mayor of Mogadishu at Afisyoni for a controversial meeting.

Northeastern State and Jubaland as well as the presidential candidate council refused to attend the conference convened by Farmajo, whose mandate ended last month due to political unrest in the country.

In an interview with the BBC Somali Service on Sunday, Northeastern State’s President Said Abdullahi Deni said they had come to Mogadishu at the invitation of international partners to attend a forum they organized for the country’s leaders to discuss the controversial election issues.

Deni announced that they have seen the Villa Somalia statement calling for a March 22 meeting on social media, a move which he said was aimed at disrupting international partners’ efforts to include talks.

The United States has warned that failure to reach a broad consensus on electoral rallies in Somalia will not be accepted and will also have political consequences that may be difficult to predict.

The newly created Somali National Salvation Forum in an open letter to the international community said Farmajo’s unilateral call for a fifth meeting is constitutional since his term expired on February 8.

The letter, which Axadlereceived, states that the NSF is expressing an alarm that Farmajo used the security apparatus for political gain and called for a change in the security and military command before election negotiations.
