Somali PM sacks top intelligence officials in thrill move that has upset Farmajo

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble on Friday sacked two senior intelligence officials in an unexpected move that allegedly angered incumbent President Farmajo.

In a statement, the prime minister’s office announced that NISA’s director of human resources, Abdullahi Kulane, and the head of the Somali intelligence unit at Mogadishu airport, Abdiwahab Sheikh Ali, have been removed from their posts. functions.

The sacking came shortly after NISA officials banned parliamentary candidates, including former governor Gedo Osman Moalim, from boarding a flight at Mogadishu airport to the southern town of Garhabarey .

Abdullahi Kulane, who is a close ally of the president at the end of his mandate, has been accused of targeting opposition figures seeking to run for parliamentary seats in their constituencies, mainly in Gedo.

Kulane and the NISA airport chief have been accused of violating Prime Minister Roble’s order issued on July 21 which warned security officials against blocking citizens, especially candidates, from travel to Aden Abdulle International Airport.

The deputy boss of NISA, who once became Farmaajo’s short-term deputy chief of staff, has repeatedly restricted citizens’ rights to freedom of movement in the country, as the constitution stipulates, in an effort to prevent Farmajo’s criticism of the upcoming elections.

“The Prime Minister reiterates that legal action will be taken against anyone who violated the country’s constitution and dared to disrupt the electoral process he is leading,” the statement said.

Sources close to Villa Somalia, the state house revealed to Axadlethat outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is unhappy with the dismissal of those responsible for espionage and will try to reinstate them in their posts.

Farmaajo, who reneged on his illegal two-year term extension last April, handed indirect election management and security over to his prime minister last May, paving the way for an inclusive FGS-FMS electoral deal.
