opposition parties and some elected officials boycott the senatorial election

In Madagascar, about thirty opposition political parties met on Friday 25 September at the Panorama Hotel in the center of the capital Antananarivo.

Among them the TIM party of former President Marc Ravalomanana and the HVM of the outgoing head of state Hery Rajaonarimampianina.

The latter rejects the holding of the senatorial election on 11 December 2020. An election that they consider constitutional and hasty, especially because several municipalities do not have large voters, and because validation of the executive order, which reduces the number of senators by 63 at. 18 are marred by irregularities according to them.

From our correspondent in Antananarivo,

After a five-hour meeting, parliamentarians and representatives of opposition political parties decided to boycott the upcoming senatorial election.

This was stated by Vonison Andrianjato, their spokesman and former Minister of Hery Rajaonarimampianina, in a statement read to the press. “It is becoming a habit for the current regime to trample on the constitution. Abuse of power is obvious because he uses the laws for his personal interest (…) We will not participate in this forced election on December 11, 2020. ”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni), which proposed the date of 11 December to the government for senatorial elections, and the High Constitutional Court, which declared the regulation reducing the number of senators from 63 to 18 in line, are also targeted. by this grouping of elected officials and political parties. Two institutions where they say they no longer trust.

Alain Andriamiteza is the Vice President of the Rassemblement de l’Opposition pour la Démocratie political platform in Madagascar, to which the TIM party in particular belongs. “All the decisions that HCC has made since its inception are completely constitutional. That’s the problem. The HCC becomes a party in political debates and an accomplice in a state or a regime every time. In relation to all the choices that have taken place, there have always been very serious challenges. Even a member of CENI made a statement that there were one million two hundred thousand duplicates, giving suspicion of all the elections that are to take place. We will completely boycott all future elections until the Constitution, CENI and HCC are reorganized. This senator is ridiculously and incorrectly placed, so we are not participating in an election in which the number of senators is reduced from 63 to 18, 6 of whom are appointed by the President of the Republic. ”

Local elected officials, big voters for the senator, have also joined the movement of these parliamentarians and opposition parties.
