Northeastern State calls for new dialogue, reprimands Farmajo’s extension of the charge

AXADLE, Somalia – The government of the state of Northeastern State has now called for the immediate resumption of dialogue in Somalia, arguing that the lower house’s decision to extend President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s designation was “unconstitutional” in all aspects of the law.

Lower House extended Farmajo’s term by two years, but the move has caused ripples in the country, leading to direct condemnation from the international community. Farmajo has since accepted the expansion.

And Said Abdullahi Denis’ government wants the federal government to return to the negotiating table, arguing that the pre-election agreement on September 17 remains the only path to federal elections that has been delayed due to the current electoral blindness.

“The Government of the State of Northeastern State Somalia declares that the agreement of 17 September 2020 is the only agreement reached to hold the federal elections and to tackle the obstacles to the implementation of the agreement in order to achieve a fair election, that is acceptable to all, “the statement read in part.

The state also fired the extension of Farmajo’s stay. Northeastern State further insisted that it does not recognize the lower house’s decision to extend the term.

“The Somali Northeastern State Government does not recognize the illegal actions of the Federal Parliament, which has extended its term and calls for electoral law and the extension of the term of office of the federal institutions of the Federal Government of Somalia.”

The state legislature on Monday voted against the decision a day after clan elders in the state condemned the expansion.

Farmajo has maintained that the lower house’s decision was legitimate and has sought the support of the African Union following a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday.

The African Union Peace and Security Council will discuss the political situation in Somalia this morning. The outgoing President Farmajo had reached out to the AU to convey the Somalia crisis, but insists the country prefers direct votes.
