KDF delivers COVID-19 vaccines to troops in Somalia

NAIROBI, Kenya – Major General [Dr] George Ng’ang’a, Director of Medical Services of the Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] launched the Covid-19 vaccination exercise for troops deployed during the African Union mission in Somalia [AMISOM] in Sector II headquarters in Dhobley.

This is part of the ongoing Phase 1 of the national immunization program in the fight against Covid-19. Kenya has over 3,500 troops serving in Somalia along with those from the Somali National Army [SNA].

Speaking during the launch of the exercise, Major General Ng’ang’a urged all staff to participate in the immunization exercise to increase efforts to combat the pandemic while maintaining a healthy force critical to the serving nation.

“Let us all include prevention mechanisms rather than choosing the curative ones. The KDF management has set a good example by participating in the vaccination drive, and we have not registered any side effects, so I assure our troops that the vaccine is safe, ”he said.

“We must not let go of our guard. We must adhere to the protocols that contain the spread of the virus – ensure that we maintain social distance, wear masks, wash and clean our hands. It will keep us safe,” he noted. .

Following the launch of the exercise, Sector II Commander Brigadier Jeff Nyaga started the vaccination drive for KDF troops deployed under AMISOM by rolling up his sleeves and becoming the first person to be vaccinated.

Deputy Sector II Commander Colonel Pascal Kitiro was the second person to be vaccinated, followed by senior officers, officers and service members based in Dhobley.

Apart from the troops, the civilians working for the United Nations based at Sector II headquarters were also grafted. The KDF troops are responsible for both sectors II and VI of the African Union Mission Forces in Somalia.
