James Swan Returns to Lead Somalia as Acting Special Representative

HOLLYWOOD – The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, named James Swan as the Acting Special Representative for Somalia and Head of UNSOM.

Guterres thanked Catriona Laing for her service and appointed Swan temporarily after her departure.

The Somali government wants to dissolve UNSOM by October 2024, as stated by Foreign Minister Ahmed Mali Fiqi in a letter to the UN Security Council.

Swan, the new envoy, has a history of diplomatic roles in African countries with complex political transitions.

His education background includes degrees from Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and the National War College.

Swan has experience as a diplomat and is proficient in English and French.
