Biden warns of the situation in Somalia when leaders convene a meeting
WASHINGTON, USA – US President Joe Biden has written to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate President about the current situation in Somalia, a country that has struggled with insecurity for the past three decades following the fall of Siad Barre.
The United States is one of the international partners that has been assisting the country for decades now, including training Danab’s elite troops actively involved in the fight against al-Shabaab militants who control large parts of central and southern Somalia in rural areas.
In accordance with section 202 (d) of the National Emergency Act, Biden stated, “I have sent the Federal Register for publication of the attached notice that the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13536 of April 12, 2010, with respect to Somalia continues to take effect after April 12, 2021. “
“The situation with regard to Somalia continues to pose an exceptional and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. Therefore, I have decided that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13536 with regard to Somalia.” he added.
In January, former US President Donald Trump withdrew all US commandos that have assisted the Somali National Army. The Ministry of Defense said the troops were stationed elsewhere in East Africa.
The United States has earmarked Al-Shabaab as a dangerous force in East Africa and even dedicated resources to fight the militants. In addition to training the Somali army, the US-African Command is responsible for providing air assistance to combat troops, particularly those from AMISOM and the SNA.
Elsewhere, outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo arrived on Saturday at the Afisiyooni in Mogadishu, where he is ready to meet all five regional presidents. For over three weeks, Said Abdullahi Deni from Northeastern State and Ahmed Madobe from Jubaland have been camping there, but have not met any representative from FGS.
Leaders are ready to discuss the current political stalemate in Somalia, which has seen politicians ballistic against each other. The opposition accuses FGS of deliberately drawing elections in the country given that the current administration period expired on 8 February.
