Thierry Mukelekele, the former spokesman for Gédéon Kyungu Mutanga, the leader of the Bakata Katanga armed group, was transferred to Kinshasa with men arrested during clashes in the Kimbembe military camp and in the town of Lubumbashi. Thierry Mukelekele detained in Ndolo prison claims his innocence.
as reported from Kinshasa, Commander Muzembe Commander
The man was arrested about two weeks before Bakata Katanga’s last attack in the city of Lubumbashi. And according to a security source from the capital of Haut-Katanga, his arrest has nothing to do with attacked on 13 February.
This former spokesman for Gédéon Kyungu Mutanga had not been in contact with the leader of Bakata Katanga since March 2020 during another attempt to infiltrate this secessionist militia in Lubumbashi, explains our source, who accuses Mukelekele of being a scammer aiming for money.
These allegations are supported by several other sources in Lubumbashi, where it is alleged that the investigation conducted by the intelligence services (military and civilian) has established that Mukelekele no longer has any connection with his former boss, does not even know where he finds himself and seeks only to withdraw money by believing that he can play intermediary.
But his relatives claim that Thierry Mukelekele had imposed himself as a mediator between Gédéon Kyungu Mutanga and the power in place. For this, he demanded to have a status, an official mandate and protection in his efforts to restore peace in Greater Katanga. And those close to Thierry Mukelekele say they are surprised by his imprisonment.
