tensions at the opening of the session

An extraordinary session opened on Tuesday 5 January at the National Assembly. The pro-Félix Tshisekedi wants at all costs to turn the page to the coalition they had formed for two years with Joseph Kabila’s common front for Congo. The goal is to give the National Assembly a new office and possibly obtain the dismissal of the Prime Minister, a close friend of the former president.

The National Assembly of the DRC is undergoing a special moment. Christophe Mboso Nkodia Mpwanga, the president of the lower house’s temporary office, even mentioned this in his introductory speech. This is a situation that has never been experienced in the history of the Congolese Parliament: almost the entire Executive Board has been dismissed. They therefore need to be replaced. This is one of the main items on the agenda for this session, which runs until February 3rd.

Félix Tshisekedi wants to have a comfortable majority in the National Assembly to allow him, he said, to implement the promised reforms before his accession to power and at the start of his five-year term. Pro-Félix Tshisekedi also wants the resignation of Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba.

But Joseph Kabila’s FCC will not make it easy for them. Members of the former president’s political family were particularly nervous this Tuesday at the National Assembly. They strongly protested the reading of the items on the agenda for this extraordinary session.

For some of them, the provisional office could not even consider the dismissal of the Prime Minister, and this competence would, according to them, be reserved for the final office to be elected. It is now up to the temporary office to publish the calendar of activities for this very special session.
