opposition on the street during a demonstration

On Thursday morning, July 29, 2021, about five hundred people demonstrated against the Transitional Military Council, the power junta since Idriss Déby Itno died in April last year. This is the first time that the authorities have allowed a demonstration by the opposition. For almost three kilometers, in Ndjamena, the protesters shouted slogans that were hostile to the junta and France.

At seven o’clock this Thursday morning, the first protesters arrived at Hamama’s roundabout, which is not far from the Ministry of Justice. A rally requested by the Wakit Tama opposition.

At 8:30 a.m., the procession started sharply and for more than two kilometers, slogans that are hostile to the Transitional Military Council and France are regularly launched. The signs read: “No to military power”, “Macron outside Chad”. Unemployed academics, pensioners and the victims of the Hissein Habré regime who are waiting to receive compensation have also joined the procession, each with his banner.

At ten o’clock the procession arrived at the Esplanade du Palais on 15 January. The principals then took the floor to deliver an identical message, it is necessary to revise the transitional charter to establish a civilian power: “The charter must be revised so that guarantees are inscribed in it. This is everyone’s statement! That is the demand of the African Union, that is the demand of the European Union, that is the demand of all partners! ”

At eleven o’clock the demonstration finally ended, but the leaders of Wakit Tama, who obviously did not appreciate the weak mobilization, have already announced other marches in the coming weeks.
