Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed Monday in an attack on a UN convoy in the east of the country, the Italian Foreign Ministry said.
An Italian military police officer was killed in the attack, the ministry said.
Ambassador Luca Attanasio “died of her wounds” after a convoy of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) came under fire near Goma, a source told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The convoy was attacked near the town of Kanyamahoro around noon. 10:15 (GMT + 2) and was part of a kidnapping attempt, Virunga National Park told Reuters.
Many armed groups work in and around Virunga, which lies along the Congolese border with Rwanda and Uganda, and they have repeatedly attacked Virunga rangers.
