controversy after the United States appealed to the military council

In Chad, Chargé d’affaires at the US Embassy Ellen Thorburn on Friday, July 1, called the Transitional Military Council – the military junta that has taken power since the death of President Idriss Deby Itno in April 2021 – to honor promises that its members will not stand to election after the transition and that it should be as short as possible. The late president’s party criticized comments that involved interference.

Among the most violent critics of such comments is the Patriotic Movement, which on the night between Sunday and Monday, July 4, condemned unacceptable interference by the United States, which in turn drew criticism from the opposition.

At MPS, the party of the late President Idriss Deby Itno, we do not lift. As the latter chose US Independence Day to also criticize the content of Washington’s message: the US diplomat has called for the promise from the Transitional Military Council (TMC) that none of its members will apply election after the transition.

But for MPS, this is an issue that will be decided during the inclusive national dialogue, warns its spokesman, Jean-Bernard Padaré: “I think things are clear. Let the Chadian people who are going to this dialogue be left “to discuss and decide on matters of national interest. We cannot accept with dignity that matters of national interest are mentioned in connection with the Independence Day of a friendly country, unless Chad is still under supervision …”

In opposition, they say they are not surprised to see MPS “roll” for the military junta, led by the son of former President Idriss Deby.

Max Kemkoye, chairman of the opposition UDP party, recalls that it is a power stemming from a coup and believes that the American diplomat was well in his role: “It is certainly not a question of talking about interference in the internal affairs of a state. It was a reminder to the CMT of their promises in front of the ambassadors’ floors. Today, democracy is one of the values universally defended and, consequently, the Chargé d’Affaires fulfills its role. ” , after the next election “.
