contrary to the Cabinet of the Presidency, Chérif Mahamat

Chadian Foreign Minister Chérif Mahamat Zène announced his resignation from the transitional government on Monday, September 19, in a tweet. Upset with his powers and in conflict with certain members of the president’s cabinet, the head of Chadian diplomacy ended up slamming the door.

as reported from Ndjamena, Madjiasra Nako

The tone of his letter, which Chérif Mahamat Zène took care to broadcast on his social networks, is polite. But he reveals a great disappointment. “For the past few months, my commitment and desire to serve my country has been thwarted by parallel initiatives by members of your cabinet and government, carried out without my knowledge and on your instructions,” writes Cherif Mahamat Zene Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

He adds: “Faced with a situation as unhealthy as it is confused and unacceptable, deliberately maintained, depriving the department which I lead of all its powers and reducing me to a mere encore, it seems to me neither appropriate nor responsible to continue to occupy my position.”

— Chérif Mahamat Zene (@Cherif_MZ) September 19, 2022 According to sources close to Chadian diplomacy, the now ex-foreign minister has been uncomfortable for several weeks following decisions and appointments made without his approval in his department. On Monday 19 September, it was his communications colleague who was appointed to address the international community in place of his foreign minister. The straw that would have broken the camel’s back.
