In Chad, the oldest private radio station has stopped broadcasting. In the face of an acute financial crisis in connection with the effects of Covid-19, Dja FM no longer broadcasts, since 27 May, after a power outage that destroyed several components in the transmitter.

Due to power outages that the Chadian capital has been drawing for several years, Dja FM radio has stopped broadcasting. Zara Mahamat Yakhoub, radio coordinator, regrets the closure.

“Well FM radio,” she said, “which is the very first free private radio station in Chad, has stopped broadcasting since last Thursday after a technical split.” This failure is the result of difficulties accumulated in recent years and exacerbated by Covid-19. To deal with it, we have even reduced the staff. Despite this, we could not go up the slope because the premature cuts in electricity force us to use generators, ie generators that can not last long, with excessive use. ”

“And so it is,” continues Zara Mahamat Yakhoub, that our transmitter on Wednesday, between the uninterrupted disturbances in the electricity generator and the power outage, received a shock that destroyed certain components. Spare parts are not easy to find in Chad. So given the financial crisis after Covid, Dja FM radio’s voice will probably be silent forever ”.
