arrest of Wakit Tama spokesman, Me Max Loalngar

The coalition of political parties and civil society organizations that opposed the transition had on Saturday demanded a march against French politics in Chad, but it was overwhelmed. The protests spread to provincial cities. On Monday, May 16, 2022, the prosecutor placed an arrest warrant for four people who had participated in this march. Wakit Tama’s spokesperson is therefore the fifth.

It was plainclothes police who arrested Wakit Tama’s spokesperson on Tuesday around eight o’clock. They were sitting in two unmarked cars, witnesses report.

According to legal sources, Master Max Loalngar is being prosecuted in the same proceeding as the other opinion leaders grabbed last Saturday. They are charged with, among other things, disturbing public order, destroying property.

On Saturday, when the Wakit Tama coalition called for a march against French politics in Chad, it was joined by traders, but especially students who did not respect the march’s path. It ended with them attacking several petrol stations bearing the brand of the French tanker Total. Other provincial cities have also joined the movement, which has been out of control since Saturday.

During a security meeting yesterday, the President of the Military Transitional Council, General Mahamat Idriss Déby, called on the security forces and the judges to show firmness against the thugs.
