an increase in the number of Minusca

This is an extraordinary increase in the maximum strength of the UN peacekeeping force in the Republic of Central Africa. The Security Council agreed to increase Minusca by 2,750 troops and 940 police officers. It was a request from the UN Secretary-General and the leader of Minusca after a hardening of attacks since the end of 2020.

From our correspondent in New York,Carrie Nooten

This increase in staff is extraordinary for what is already one of the three most important peace missions of the United Nations. By being able to gradually integrate these 2,750 soldiers and 940 police officers, Minusca will increase the workforce to 14,400 soldiers and 3,020 police officers. Reinforcements to help Minusca carry out its missions: protect civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

As to the origin of these reinforcements, Bangui and Minusca both hope to be able to integrate the 800 Rwandan soldiers sent at the beginning of the year under bilateral cooperation; they are recognized for their professionalism and discipline. The rest of the new peacekeepers may be Senegalese, Moroccan or Mauritanian.

Russia abstained

Alone in the Security Council Russia, who also sent many mercenaries on the spot, abstained. France, she welcomed this vote following the recent attacks carried out by the coalition led by former President Bozizé. The Council also wished to send a message of symbolic support to the Central African Republic two days in advance second round of legislative elections.

Moreover, while the Central African Republic continues to demand the lifting of the arms embargo, the Security Council resolution noted “the request from the Central African authorities”. And reminds them of the need to ensure protection, control and traceability should the transfer take place this summer.
