Ancelotti’s clash with Rodrygo: “You should greet me”
Carlo Ancelotti’s reaction after Real Madrid’s first goal at La Cerámica, when he turned to his bench and gestured reproachfully at Brazilian Rodrygo Goes, has been explained by the Italian coach as being due to the fact that his player did not greet him when he was substituted.
Carlo Ancelotti was considered serious after removing Rodrygo from the pitch. The Italian scolded him, as seen in the game footage.
A video from ‘MovistarFutbol’ shows Ancelotti getting angry with Rodrygo after walking past him without looking at him. “You should salute me,” the Italian told Rodrygo, pointing his finger at him.
After the match, and with Madrid already through to the quarter-finals with a 2-3 victory over Villarreal, the coach spoke to the media and explained exactly what happened with Rodrygo. A gesture from the Brazilian prompted the coach to talk to him very seriously, although he doesn’t think he did it on purpose.
“Rodrygo did his job. He didn’t greet me because I think he forgot… but for me it doesn’t change anything,” he told a press conference at La Ceramica.
He also explained why he decided to take him off the field in the 56th minute: “The change? At half-time, he had a little tense muscle and I preferred not to take any risks”.
Rodrygo returned to the Copa del Rey starting line-up after coming on as a substitute in the ‘Clasico’ of the Spanish Super Cup final in Riyadh and left the pitch in frustration after 56 minutes as Real Madrid lost 2- 0 and after a match in which he does not excel.
